Jesus was the Servant of His Abba, and he taught his disciples (and through them, us as well) to serve rather than be served (Mathew 20:26-28; Mark 10:43; Luke 22:26). He made this abundantly clear in a concrete manner when He washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper (John 13: 1-5). Although human beings have certainly misunderstood His words and acted as they pleased over the millennia, His words must guide us in the way we handle ourselves and treat others.
This course will focus on “servant leadership,” the kind of leadership that the Church needs in every age. We will examine the biblical roots of “servant leadership” and reflect on their relevance today, as ours is a very “boss leadership” style. We will also examine our tradition, discovering Church teaching on the topic and how some of our greatest saints led in this manner. We will also look at concrete ways that 21st century Catholics can exercise servant leadership and the pitfalls that often interfere with doing so
